Dr. Denis Mukwege

Congolese surgeon and champion of women’s rights, Dr. Denis Mukwege is chief surgeon at Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, where he has healed thousands of women from the physical and mental damages of rape in a country seen by some as at war with its women. After ten years on the job, the gynecologist has become a counselor, protector and confidant to many of his female patients. Mukwege’s work continues to draw global attention to the sexual violence ravaging the Democratic Republic of Congo. In a recent magazine article, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Dr. Mukwege represents "humanity at its best."
