African Voices

Show #56

Dr. Hantanirina Rasamimanana

This week on African Voices, scientist Hantanirina Rasamimanana, also known as Madagascar’s “Lemur Lady.” She’s spent much of her adult life in the forests of Madagascar, documenting the life of the lemur--a primitive primate whose very existence is now threatened. Rasamimanana is not just a researcher, but a one-woman campaign working to raise awareness of the need to protect the lemur’s shrinking habitat. By helping the lemur, she also aims to help the environment on Madagascar’s huge island land, whose unique flora and fauna are threatened by deforestation and the spread of human habitation. Rasamimanana is taking her life’s work from the forest to the classroom, hoping to inspire the next generation about lemurs and their habitat.
