William Kentridge
His work is some of the most sought after and expensive South African art, collected by major institutions around the world. South African artist William Kentridge's pieces are being exhibited alongside some of the most iconic artworks in the world, another indication of his growing success in the global contemporary art market. From charcoal sketches to short animated films and puppet shows, Kentridge's work encompasses a variety of forms. He recently directed an opera at New York's Metropolitan Opera, showcasing his knack of incorporating sculptural and film elements into the stage direction. For decades, Johannesburg has been a source of inspiration for Kentridge, and his work often makes political and social comments reflecting the inequalities of South African urban life.
