MADAGASCAR SAFE HAVENS
A little over a month ago, we sent our Ben Wedeman to Madagascar to take a closer look at this country full of contrasts. Madagascar is, of course, known for its immense natural beauty, but in the capital, the population knows all too well the effects of continued political volatility. It's no doubt taken its toll, but in his visit, Ben also found resilient residents determined to carve out safe havens in the sprawling city.
BUILDING BETTER FUTURES
In Madagascar, primary school enrollment rates have risen to nearly 90%. It's a success story the country is keen to build upon. To keep up with demand means constant construction of classrooms. In part two of his report, Ben Wedeman finds an innovative program aimed at doing just that.
GAME CHANGER
Here in Johannesburg and elsewhere, the questions will surely come: Was the World Cup worth it? The billions of dollars spent in preparation and those ten shiny and now very empty stadiums -- what will become of them? But the glow of Africa's first World Cup is still very much alive here. And as David McKenzie found out, before looking at the future impact, businesses in Soweto would rather focus on a very profitable past month.
