There are around 35 million people living in the GCC and 37% of them are foreign workers. Importing workers has been a solution for the GCC's labor shortage for decades and was mutually beneficial for foreigners and the host country. But as the GCC currencies continue to peg to the plunging dollar, and inflation in the region continues to spiral, it is the expatriate workers who are feeling the biggest pinch. Marketplace Middle East investigates how the decline inflation is having a devastating impact on the many foreign workers in the region.

This week, MME follows the rise of one of the region’s bright lights, Egyptian jewelry designer Azza Fahmy. With the hope of gaining international recognition, Fahmy took her traditional designs and collaborated with renowned British designer, Julien Macdonald. With the team finishing their second collection at London Fashion Week this year, MME takes a look at how one Egyptian jewelry designer found it necessary to sell well in the West, in order to be successful in the Middle East.
