Inside The Middle East
SHOW #77
Hosted by Rima Maktabi from Kuwait
A DAY AT THE FISH MARKET
Before oil, the fruit of the sea was Kuwait’s main income-generating industry. We spend a day at the fish market as boats unload their catch and prepare for the mayhem that is the daily fish auction – we were at the heart of it.
BLIND CRICKETERS IN THE UAE
An inspirational story - the Pakistani blind cricket team could not obtain UK visas to play their English counterparts due to security reasons. So the England team met the Pakistani side in the Emirate of Sharjah. The only security threat we saw was to our own CNN cameraman - it can be a dangerous sport.
CAMPUS CORNER
We meet an all-women IT team from American University of Kuwait who have won the regional round of the Microsoft Imagine Cup with their invention that allows people with hand disabilities - even those with amputations - to use computers. They'll take their prototype to the finals of the contest - Microsoft’s annual innovation competition for youth - in Warsaw in July.
I-REPORT
Design students at the Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar ended their academic year with the 11th annual fashion show. One student takes us backstage at the catwalk in a special campus contribution from VCU-Q; and the tech community in Jordan has launched a new initiative called “Ammam Tech Tuesdays” to swap ideas on the latest developments in technology. We bring you an I-Report from the inaugural gathering.
YOUR IME DIARY
Competitions in graffiti and photography offer a rare creative outlet for Kuwaiti teens - all part of the Youth Initiative by the English-language Al Watan Daily newspaper.
We also follow-up on a story that received a lot of viewer feedback: Elham Al-Qasimi, the first Arab woman to reach the North Pole, has returned to Dubai following her historic trek. Elham reached the "top of the world" on April 23rd, where she planted the Emirati flag and scattered a handful of sand from her native UAE.
