SHOW #5
Contemporary Art
icon presenter Monita Rajpal visits London's Tate Modern gallery to peer closer at the world of contemporary art. The gallery's largest exhibition space has been filled by the work of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, who has been named by Art Review as 2010's most powerful artist. icon travels to his studio and art workshop in Beijing to meet the man known for designing the "Birds Nest" Beijing Olympics stadium and for his political activism.
The program also looks at how the arts are becoming a safe investment for those with millions to spend, as currencies fluctuate and oil and gold veer from high to low. Each year for a few days in Autumn, London becomes the hunting ground for art collectors. With the global contemporary art market becoming a cut throat and competitive space, icon witnesses the feeding frenzy at the annual Frieze Art Fair and talks to artist Damien Hirst about market trends.
Also this month, icon meets an individual who has the power to influence the art market - Eli Broad. We head to Los Angeles to meet the American billionaire, entrepreneur and philanthropist, going inside his Contemporary Art Foundation to talk about his love of art.
