Revealed
SHOW #38
Anish Kapoor
Anish Kapoor is one of the world's most successful living artists. A former Turner Prize winner, he is also among the world’s wealthiest, with a rumored net worth of 40 million pounds. His sculptures are famously huge, brightly colored, often awe-inspiring optical illusions and widely accessible for the sensorial experience they offer the viewer.
Revealed explores the world of the acclaimed sculptor as he embarks on some of his most challenging projects yet. From the unveiling of "Orbit", the 115-meter tower chosen to mark the London 2012 Olympic Games, to the world's biggest public art project: a 15 million-pound series of five world-class sculptures that will pepper the Tees Valley area in Northern England. The first, Temenos, will be completed in June and we follow Kapoor as he travels to Middlesbrough for his first visit since works started. Donning a hard hat, Kapoor is excited to be up close to the massive structure.
From public art to gallery space, we follow Kapoor to Bilbao ahead of the opening of his exhibition at the prestigious Guggenheim Museum, where works spanning 30 years of his career are shown. Revealed goes behind the scenes of the exhibition and gains exclusive access to the installation process where Kapoor has a hands-on approach. We see how the artist's vision for his works adapts to the new gallery space and how he deals with the challenges that come with it. Complaining about the color of the walls, Kapoor insists they are beige – and not, as agreed, white. The gallery changes the lighting until the artist is happy.
At the opening of the exhibition, Kapoor reveals a press-shy side to his personality. Uncomfortable with the media attention, we see him shift from the spotlight, craving to be back home in London making his sculptures.
Finally, Anish Kapoor shows Revealed the rooms of his thriving workshop in South London and let us in to his private working space "where his work reveals itself." Among a collection of his most recognizable stainless steel pieces, sketches and models, Kapoor talks about his work, and how it's made.
