SHOW #26

Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Archbishop Desmond Tutu is an iconic symbol of peace and forgiveness in post-apartheid South Africa. Having campaigned for economic sanctions and non-violent opposition to segregation throughout the 70s and 80s in his home country, the cleric was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 and became the first black head of the Anglican Church of South Africa.

Not always popular, he had many enemies during decades of racial turbulence, but his faith, and trust in the universal goodness of humanity, carried him through. Tutu's religious and moral code, and his high-profile status, placed him ideally to sit on the TRC - Truth and Reconciliation Commission - a body which eased South Africa into its new democratic era with a very simple concept: forgiveness granted in exchange for the truth.

Nowadays, Tutu's attentions turn to the global community and he throws himself in to many active causes on the international stage. He is a powerful and compassionate voice in fighting the good fight against injustices taking place from Zimbabwe to Tibet.

'Revealed' follows Tutu during the launch of his new project: The Elders. Brought together by Peter Gabriel and Richard Branson in summer of 2007, they are a group of 12 senior statesmen, including Nelson Mandela and Graca Machel, all with the stature to go in to conflict situations and "knock heads together." We follow him as he travels to Darfur, Sudan with Jimmy Carter to meet with government officials and aid workers.

We seek to uncover the source of Tutu's belief, strength and charisma. As a man of God, we see him leading his congregants in a Eucharist service at St. George's Cathedral in Cape Town. We join him as he visits a local orphanage, attends an interfaith service at Tygerberg Children's Hospital, and films a meeting with pop star Annie Lennox - who is seeking his wisdom on the subject of AIDS.
