SHOW #27
Venus Williams
With the fastest serve ever in women's tour history and 16 grand slam titles under her belt, Venus Williams' position among the world's top players endures more than a decade into her career. On this month's edition of Revealed, we follow Williams on court and behind the scenes at the Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha. From the competitor's perspective, Revealed watches Williams defeat the world's top four players in succession, going on to claim one of the few titles that until now, remained beyond her reach.
On her way towards victory, Williams defeats younger sister Serena in yet another intense and emotionally-draining game. To this day, the public's interest in the two sisters and their talent has not faltered, and Revealed offers the chance to hear from both players on the challenges of their relationship, as they prepare to face one another.
Coached from a young age by their self-taught father Richard Williams, the Williams sisters have enjoyed many years of success as both teammates and rivals. Their mother Oracene Price explains her determination that the challenge they face on the court will not shake the family bond. "I simply remind them that this is just a game and eventually it will be over, and you will have to live with each other. So just go out there and do your best, and whoever wins, wins, and whoever loses, better luck next time".
More than a powerful athlete, the 28 year-old tennis star's commitments extend well beyond the world of tennis - with her own sports fashion line and interior design company. Revealed follows Williams to her home in Miami, where she shoots a 16-page spread for Italian Marie Claire with photographer Koto Bolofo, racing through twenty outfits and attempting her first underwater shoot.
In the words of Billie Jean King, Williams "has got the 'it-factor'. People want to know about Venus; how she is doing, what she is feeling, what she is wearing, and what she is thinking? She is way more than an athlete". Hip-hop artist Wyclef Jean was so taken with Williams he is moved to write a song in her honour, an acoustic version of which he performs for Revealed.
"Fame has never been important to me. My goals have always been to excel in tennis, and to win championships. When it's all said and done and there is somebody else on the rise and I'm out. I'll be fine with that" ~ Venus Williams
Revealed rides the tournament with Williams, from training to matches to precious downtime in between, and seeks to unearth what she sees as the key to her inspiring and lasting success.
