Spirit Of
SHOW #15
Democracy
Can multi-party democracy in Africa ever be successful when ethnic loyalties are so strong?
In September, “The Spirit of Democracy” will focus on whether democracy can flourish in Africa and consider what factors are helping or hindering that process. We’ll talk to a number of leaders in the region to assess Africa’s unique challenges and hear the solutions they believe will be critical to success in the future.
We look at the current situation in Mozambique - one of the great African success stories in recent years. In the former war-torn country, we interview the ex-President, Joaquim Chissano, who recently won the inaugural Prize for Achievement in African Leadership.
We will also be talking to the former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and Mo Ibrahim, the Sudanese-born mobile communications millionaire whose foundation put up the money for the leadership award won by Chissano.
Lastly, we will be hearing from the Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga and award-winning writers and photographers, Tim Butcher and Tim Hetherington, about their experiences in Congo and Liberia.
