Spirit Of
EPISODE 4
THE SPIRIT OF SPORT
Football was dubbed the ‘beautiful game’ by the world’s best ever player Pele and it was once described as more important than life or death by the legendary Liverpool FC manager Bill Shankly.
On The Spirit of..Sport, CNN's Becky Anderson searches for what it takes to be a champion and what divides the good from the great. And she tries to get to grips with a sport that can drive grown men to tears and has the power to reshape the image of a nation.
Becky starts the show in Los Angeles, on the trail of one of the icons of the sporting world, the England footballer David Beckham. We compare and contrast this current champion with a boxer from London's East End who is just starting out in his sporting career.
Next, we pose the question, is sporting greatness good enough? One former football champion gives us insight into how sport can be a great healer and how it can have a profound effect on a nation. He's Germany's Franz Beckenbauer, the only man who's won a World Cup as player and manager and run a World Cup as organizer.
Beckenbauer tells us about his career highlights and his elation at running a hugely successful sporting event. "I think the world has now a different impression of the country than before the World Cup", Beckenbauer tells CNN.
