SHOW #61

Multihulls

In the world of extreme sailing, multlihulls take many of the major prizes. In the right hands they can shatter world speed records, cross the Atlantic in less than five days and achieve speeds in excess of 40 knots, but these sailing machines need to handled with great respect. Make a mistake at high speed on a multihull and things can go very wrong, very quickly indeed.

Multihulls are the theme of the June edition of MainSail hosted by Shirley Robertson in Venice where she will be racing her own multihull, an Extreme 40 catamaran, in the the first ever sailing event to be hosted in the city. We go on to the race track with Shirley competing at one of the world's most spectacular city's against top international sailing talent.

In Venice we also meet the man they call Mr. Multihull. Frenchman Loick Peyron has crossed the Atlantic forty three times, been winning sailing majors for twenty two years and has lived life right on the edge when he survived the brutal destruction of his multihull in a wild Atlantic storm.

We get an inside track on the U.S. America's Cup team who are preparing to race multihulls in the next America's Cup final as we are invited onto their coach boat and see one of the world's highest profile and most respected sailing teams in action. We then go and meet their opposition as Shirley Robertson heads to Switzerland to sail with the America's Cup defenders Alinghi, and get involved with their training program.

From landlocked Switzerland, we go Trans Atlantic in the Volvo Ocean Race where we follow the personal story of sailor Shannon Falcone who compares multihull sailing to racing a more traditional monohull from the USA to Ireland as he sprints across the ocean on a journey that is far from event free!
