SHOW #62
Winning
This month on CNN MainSail, the theme is 'winning' - what does it take to succeed at the highest level of professional sailing? Shirley Robertson, herself an Olympic double gold medallist, hitches a ride on board Ericsson 4 for a once in a lifetime trip on the winning yacht for the last leg of the Volvo Ocean Race, to find out what it takes...
Shirley will live, sleep and eat with the crew, experiencing first hand the harsh existence that is 'normal life' for the Volvo sailors. With exclusive access to Torben Grael and his team, Shirley will explore what drives these bloody-minded professionals to the limits of physical endurance, a stark contrast to round the world record holder Francis Joyon, who explains his drive is something very different indeed.
Shirley will explore the fine balance between risk and reward in the long term world of open ocean legs - a far cry from her own 20 year Olympic career in short course racing, explained in contrast by 3-time Olympic medallist Robert Scheidt, from the Giraglia Rolex Cup in St. Tropez.
In Stockholm, she'll explore Ericsson's headquarters - a world class back stage set up that has helped guide the team to victory. With Ericsson's boat builders, she'll learn how design can give a team a winning edge, and we take a look at the sailing world's best kept design secret - will Alinghi's mystery creation look like a potential winner when it is finally unveiled in Switzerland? And as the Ericsson 4 team cross the finish line in St. Petersburg and the celebrations begin, Shirley will find out what the winning moment feels like - has it all been worth it?
