SHOW #75

Match Racing

Double Olympic gold medalist Shirley Robertson takes us into the match racing world, a place that demands a cool head, quick thinking and at times brutal aggression. Of all the different forms of sailboat racing none are easier to describe than match racing - a head-to-head between two skippers and their crews. The first boat to finish the race wins.

This is a type of sailing where some of the best in the world thrive on intimidating their opponents and where the way you act ashore can play a part in whether you win on the water. The most famous match racing competition in the world is the America's Cup where the best racers can command huge salaries if their billionaire bosses believe that they've got what is takes to win.

Shirley competes in a match race herself in the Middle East, and with cameras filming the match from the air, the shore and on board with her, gives a unique insight of how the games are played. She then travels to the Swedish round of the World Match Racing Tour where she spends time, both ashore and out on the water, with those already at the top of their games and others who have committed themselves to a career in this world, if they can make the grade.

She also finds out just what if takes to be the best and identifies some of those who could be skippering for an America's Cup team in the future.
